the 13th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art
For the 13th edition of the Berlin Biennale the artist collective Artcom presents the video installation Balqaş Jyry as part of their initiative Care for Balkhash. The work reflects on nomadic knowledge, colonial legacies, and contemporary ecological, social, and climate challenges. Drawing on the heritage of qazaqliq, the lake is given voice and presence, speaking of ecological loss and asserting its right to exist. The video is accompanied by an installation of shym shy (steppe reed), evoking collective artistic practices and deep interdependence with fragile ecosystems.

"The Spectre of the Sea"
Gresik, East Java, Indonesia
Biennale Jawa Timur XI: “Hantu Laut” situates the coastal landscape as a critical site of negotiation between dominant imaginaries, industrial forces, and marginalized forms of local knowledge. The “Hantu Laut” is a metaphor for the unseen forces that haunt and shape coastal life: ecological degradation, economic centralization, and the erasure of cultural agency under development regimes. By invoking this spectral figure, the Biennale offers a lens through which to examine how myth, collective memory, and everyday tactics become strategies of resilience and dissent. Here, aesthetics is not confined to the visual; it becomes a tool of negotiation an embodied response to structural invisibility and spatial domination.

Interweaving Climate, Water(s) and Communities
The internationall exhibition begins in the Steppes of Saryarka on the shores of Lake Balkhash, set within the nomadic cultural landscape.
By embracing diverse perspectives, knowledge systems, and historical contexts that shape the cultural landscape, the exhibition invites a rethinking of socio-natural interactions, a deeper understanding of aquatic spaces, and the evolving dynamics of hydro-social relationships. It calls for a revaluation of strategies through decolonial imagination, offering new paths forward for sustainable futures.
