a series of art interventions, field trips, and collective practices conducted by the Artcom Platform team and the Care for Balkhash community along the shores of Lake Balkhash from 2020 to 2023.

Zine "Our Bektau Ata", 2023
The zine “Our Bektau Ata” was created
during a visual study of Bektau Ata, a sacred site in the Balkhash region, by participants of a workshop led by artist Karlygash Akhmetbek, as part of the Art Collider x Balkhash Youth program by Artcom Platform in 2023.
It is a collection of participants' feelings, observations, and reflections on art practices, interventions, and interviews with the local community of Bektau Ata.

“The Song of Ömirkeldi Äbeuov”

The documentary celebrates the 75th anniversary of artist Omirkeldi Abeuov, who resides and works in Balkhash. Through his art, Abeuov continues to advance Kazakh traditions in wood carving and weaving, honoring his ancestors and nurturing future generations. His work illuminates the pivotal pages of Kazakhstan’s political, social, and cultural history.

“Balkhash: Darkness Over the Grave”

In the film, Balkhash city based writer and journalist Zhanbolat Bashar tells the story of the 1930s man-made famine Asharshylyk around Lake Balkhash, Kazakhstan and the burial sites of its victims. He is the author of the novel The Darkness Over the Grave, based on testimonies of witnesses to the man-made famine.

This lecture course provides a structured historical and interdisciplinary introduction to the nomadic societies of the Desht-i-Kipchak steppe, examining how the nomadic commune was organized and the principles and survival strategies that sustained steppe power over centuries. The course includes a focused module on gender, addressing the roles of women in nomadic society and the configuration of gender relations in the steppe.
